Tips For Finding New Music

September 29, 2008

At one point or another all of us get bored of our playlist and want some new fresh music so I compiled a list of things to do when you reach this obstacle.

1. Ask Me
Fear not the Great T Dub for I, like you, are a mortal music fan. The only difference between us is that I most likely have a bigger music library. Hit me up with a general kind of hip hop (or another genre) that you like and I can get back to you with some suggestions and downloads within a day.
2. http://pandora.com/
I tried to tell you before, Pandora is dope if you are looking for new music.
3. iLike
iLike is an application that combines with your iTunes music library to show you music similar to whatever you are playing. Free download, it can’t hurt.
4. Your Favorite Artist’s Wikipedia Page
Usually your favorite artist will have “Affiliates” (Other Artists) on their Wikipedia page. Those affiliates could have a style similar to the artist’s style if you are willing to look into them. Also look into what record label the artist is signed to and the other artists in that label. A lot of the time artists with similar content or style are signed to the same label.
For Example: If you like Atmosphere…  Rhymesayers Entertainment
5. Check blogs
A lot of the time a blogger will feature an artist and say who they remind him of.
6. “Artist Mapping”
Artist Mapping is a step-by-step concept I created for fans looking for new music.
1. Pull up a tracklist for one of your favorite albums.
2. Scroll down until you find a featured artist.
3. Look them up. There is sure to be some clips of their music somewhere on the web.
4. If you like them, download some of their music, if not, go back to the original album and find the next featured artist, Repeat steps 3 and 4.
5. If you are bored or done with the featured artists on a particular album go to another album and restart the process. I guarantee you will find new music.

Hip Hop Blogging Is Dead Part. 2

September 29, 2008

I got an e-mail the other day from someone responding to my first Hip Hop Blogging Is Dead post and I wanted to respond to it in another post so everyone could see.

Email:
Yo T Dub I saw your hiphop blogging is dead article and man you need to shutup. All those sites you talking about and even those leech blogs are probably making more money than you right now. Keep it to yourself nobody cares about your bitching plus your site is shit. Be humble and once you get some recognition then maybe you can run your fat mouth. You ain’t got no rep yet, plus people don’t want old stuff why would you even care about something you have already heard. Plus nobody listens to underground anymore, THATS WHY ITS UNDERGROUND.
Stop whining cuz you have 2 views per day.
My Response:

Wow that probably took you awhile to think through all that huh?
Shut up Son!
You obviously have no respect for hip hop and the innovators of the genre. And maybe you have never been to an MF Doom concert, people listen to underground, trust me, you are just too ignorant to listen to lyrical hip hop.
Oh and as for your whining about my money and views. I don’t give a shit. Attacking my site views is childish, do you have a site? do you get 500 views a day? and I don’t care about money, all the money we make from this site goes right back into it plus I pride the whole concept of The Hip Hop Post on the fact that WE ARE NOT SELLOUTS!
We don’t post “New Chris Brown Singles” just to get a couple extra views.
Plus you were telling me to be humble. Man in the famous words of Muhammad Ali, “Humble people, I’ve found, don’t get very far.”
Next time have your own site ready before you attack somebody else’s.

Album Review: Ill Bill – The Hour Of Reprisal

September 28, 2008

Ill Bill hits back with his latest release titled The Hour of Reprisal. Now I’ve played this somewhere between 2 and 3 times today so it by no means is a complete review of the whole album. Such is Ill Bill and his compatriates Non Phixion that it can take years before you actually get everything they talk about in their lyrics. The Hour of Reprisal is no different.

Starting off with the track Babylon, Ill Bill sets the tone for the political underlay and hidden agendas that much of the album is focussed upon. It’s no surprise to find Immortal Technique on this release but what is interesting is that in the track War is my Destiny the great Metal legend Max Cavalera of Sepultura and Soulfly fame adds his vocal talents to the chorus.

The album is laced with sampled guitars and metal riffs underlying Ill Bill’s summary of how he sees the world. Make no mistake behind the self professed “I’m a Goon” as track 17 proudly states there is a man who definitely spends a lot of his time reading the unorthodox releases that discuss the motivations behind our world leaders policy making. It’s not always a pretty sight but for someone like myself who seeks to understand the way our world works and the ever ticking clock of time it is insightful, if not a tad scary at times.

One of the key tracks is U.B.S. the Unauthorized Biography of Slayer where Ill Bill takes his own version of Nas’ Unauthorized Biography of Rakim to another level whilst discussing the origins and history of Heavy Metal God’s Slayer. This underlies Bills’ Metal Background which was his first musical endeavour before forming Non Phixion.

My favourite tracks and bare in mind I’ve only listened to it for the first time today are White *****, The Most Dangerous Weapon Alive, I’m a Goon, War is my Destiny, Babylon and Doomsday was Written in an Alien Bible.

If you like stuff like Immortal Technique, Chino XL, Dead Prez or even Non Phixion and Ill Bill you won’t be dissapointed by this release. It even features several classic Uncle Howie skits.

Album Review: Electric Laser – Giant Panda

September 28, 2008

Giant Panda is a dope alternative hip hop group out of California consisting of artists Newman, Maanumental, and Chikaramanga. Electric Laser is the second full length studio album by Giant Panda and follows the amazing 2005 debut Fly School Reunion.

Electric Laser, as the name implies, has very electronic based production with ample use of techno synths and 80’s dance beats. A cool and advanced sound stays consistent throughout the album while there is the occasional complex or faster beat like in “Same Old Shit”. Drums and Jazz samples give the album contrast to balance the electronic beats.
The lyrics in this album are interesting and fun if you are willing enough to really listen. What really confused me at first was the occasional Japanese lyrics in songs like “Precise Calculator”. There are only a few so the language barrier shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
The lyrical sound of this album is very raw and clear which sometimes is favorable because not everyone likes the auto-tune effect, but sometimes with a raw lyrics and nice beats the artists can be overpowered by the production which happens in a couple songs on this album.
Talent in wordplay and flow is apparent especially in the song “AIM” where over a cool beat Giant Panda drops an intelligent alliterate verse based on the letter “T”. And also lyrics easy to sing along to like in the track “Speakers Pop”.
The group overall reminds me of a current “hipster” version of A Tribe Called Quest and the album is a one of the better underground works of this year.
TrackList:
1. “Laser Beam (Scotty’s Theme)”
2. “Justin Case”
3. “Ready to Fly”
4. “Speakers Pop”
5. “AIM”
6. “Laser Ray”
7. “Precise Calculator”
8. “Same Old $#!+”
9. “CinemaX”
10. “Pops”
11. “Let it Go”
12. “Do the Robot in Cyberspace”
13. “Speakers Funk”
